SPRING     FLING     12th    APRIL     2 0 0 7

For the fourth year running BEPA took time out from pulse trading to support the Norfolk Showground Spring Fling 2007. Enjoying its biggest attendance ever of 4600 children, their helpers and parents, the Spring Fling was once again a great success.

The theme of 2007 was of 'Taste' and all stands made an effort to educate today's children in food, where it comes from and the many different ways it can be prepared and enjoyed. Fruit and vegetables were blended to wonderful 'smoothies', bread was baked, kneaded, flavoured and coloured to bring out children's imagination of the versatility of flour, while on one stall 'flavour' was differentiated from 'taste' to help both children and adults understand more of what they eat and why they may prefer one substance over another.

The BEPA stand enjoyed an abundance of children eager to exhibit their artistic talents in collage design. Split into three age groups it was most noticeable that the 7 to 11 year olds had a far more imaginative mindset than the 12 years plus group - perhaps a reflection on true innocence, before influences of TV and computer games 'dull' there imagination and individualism? Children who had been to last year's Spring Fling tried their wits again this time to walk away with the coveted £20 prize and at the end of an exhausting day we had over 470 collages spread on every shelf, table and floor space.

Looking around it was apparent that other stands were also doing collages - our idea has been copied! Unfortunately, this means that BEPA needs to re-think its strategy for another year and come up with a new educational idea.

The WI was most supportive in their production of Fawcet Fudge, cooking enough to last the whole day. It was a great pleasure presenting a free sample to the traders of the Fudge stall who couldn't believe what it was made from - nor could most others who tried it! 500 recipe leaflets were handed out to eager mothers, while youngsters came back for seconds.

Many thanks to all members who helped on the day and in setting up. Thanks to BEPA members for supplying pea, beans and lupins for the collages, display boxes and 'guessing the numbers of peas in the jar'.
